How Long Is a Boiler Warranty? What a New Boiler Warranty Covers

A new boiler warranty can run from a few years to over a decade. The length depends on the manufacturer, the model and the installer's accreditation, and it only holds if the boiler is registered and serviced.
A new boiler warranty lasts anywhere from a few years to more than a decade, and the length is set by the manufacturer, the specific model, and whether the installer is accredited with that manufacturer. The same boiler can come with a shorter standard warranty from one installer and a longer one from another. Whatever the length, it only holds if the boiler is registered after fitting and serviced every year.
How long is a boiler warranty on a new boiler?
There is no single figure. Each manufacturer offers a standard warranty on any installation by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and many offer a longer warranty on selected models when the installer belongs to their accredited scheme.
Warranty terms also differ between a manufacturer's own ranges: an entry-level model often carries a shorter term than the flagship in the same brand, and value brands such as Vokera, covered in our guide to whether Vokera boilers are any good, set their own terms again. Our boiler brand guide sets out how the main UK manufacturers position their warranties. Because terms change, the only figure that matters is the one written on your quote for the exact model being fitted, so ask for it in writing before you agree to anything.
Manufacturer warranty vs installer guarantee: what is the difference?
The manufacturer's warranty covers faults in the boiler itself. The installer's guarantee covers the work they did: pipework, connections, flue, condensate and controls wiring.
They are separate promises from separate companies. If the boiler's fan or circuit board fails because of a manufacturing fault, the manufacturer deals with it, usually by sending its own engineer. If a joint in the new pipework weeps or the condensate pipe was run badly, that is the installer's responsibility. A good quote states both: the manufacturer's warranty length and what the installer's own workmanship guarantee covers and for how long. Separately, under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, installation work must be carried out with reasonable care and skill whatever the paperwork says.
What does a boiler warranty cover, and what does it not?
A manufacturer's warranty normally covers parts and labour for faults in the boiler caused by how it was made. It does not cover the rest of your heating system or damage from outside causes.
Typical exclusions include:
- Sludge and debris. Damage caused by dirty system water, which is why makers expect the system to be cleaned and treated, and often a magnetic filter fitted, when a new boiler goes in.
- The wider system. Radiators, valves, pipework, the hot water cylinder and third-party controls are not part of the boiler warranty.
- Frozen condensate pipes, low water pressure and gas supply problems. A visit for one of these is often chargeable because the boiler itself is not faulty.
- Accidental damage and unauthorised repairs. Anyone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer opening the boiler can void the cover.
Read the manufacturer's terms for the exact list; they are usually published on its website under the model name.
What can void a new boiler warranty?
The three most common reasons are a missed annual service, a boiler that was never registered with the manufacturer, and a missing or incomplete Benchmark checklist.
Most manufacturers ask for the boiler to be registered within a set period after installation, and many installers do this for you; ask for the confirmation. The boiler then needs a service every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer, recorded in the service section of the Benchmark checklist. Our guide to the Benchmark checklist explains what should be filled in on the day. If a service slips by a few weeks, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming the warranty has gone, but do not let it slide for a year.
How do you check if your boiler is still under warranty?
Find the boiler's serial number, usually on a label under the front casing or on the Benchmark checklist, and contact the manufacturer. Most have an online checker or will confirm the registration and end date by phone.
This is worth doing if you have bought a home with a fairly new boiler. Many manufacturers allow the remaining warranty to pass to a new owner, sometimes with a form to fill in, so ask the seller for the Benchmark checklist, the registration confirmation and the service history before completion.
Do you need boiler cover if the boiler is under warranty?
Often not for the boiler itself, because the warranty already covers its manufacturing faults. Cover or insurance is a different product that can include the wider heating system and breakdowns the warranty excludes.
If your radiators, pipework and cylinder are old, a cover plan may still be worth pricing, but check that it does not duplicate the warranty and that it covers the parts of the system you are actually worried about. Some cover plans include the annual service, which you need anyway to keep the warranty valid; compare that cost with booking a standalone service.
Is a longer warranty worth paying more for?
Sometimes. A longer warranty reduces the risk of a large repair bill in the boiler's later years, but it is only as good as the servicing that keeps it valid and the installation it sits on.
When you compare boiler quotes, set the warranty length next to the model, the output, the system clean and the controls, rather than treating it as the deciding factor. A well-sized boiler with a shorter warranty, fitted into a clean system, will usually give fewer problems than an oversized one with a long warranty fitted into sludge.
Frequently asked questions
Does a boiler warranty cover parts and labour?
A manufacturer's warranty normally covers both parts and labour for faults caused by how the boiler was made, usually with the manufacturer's own engineer attending. It does not cover the wider heating system or damage from sludge, frost or unauthorised repairs.
Does a boiler warranty transfer when you sell the house?
Many manufacturers allow the remaining warranty to pass to the new owner, sometimes after a form is submitted. Check the manufacturer's terms and hand over the Benchmark checklist, registration confirmation and service history with the house.
Who registers a new boiler for the warranty?
Many installers register the boiler with the manufacturer for you after fitting it, but the responsibility can fall to the homeowner. Ask for the registration confirmation, and if you do not receive it, register the boiler yourself using its serial number.
