Why the Benchmark Checklist Matters for Your Warranty

The Benchmark checklist is a record that your boiler has been installed, commissioned, and handover explained correctly. The installer must fill it in during and after the installation. It covers crucial checks like correct gas pressure, flue safety, and system water quality. When finished, the installer should give you a copy. You must keep this document safe.

If you need to make a warranty claim, the manufacturer will ask for your Benchmark checklist. Without it, they may reject your claim, even if the installer was Gas Safe registered. How It Differs From Gas Safe Registration

However, Gas Safe registration does not guarantee the installation meets the specific standards required by your boiler's manufacturer for warranty purposes. An installer can be Gas Safe registered but fail to complete the Benchmark checklist. The checklist is the separate, warranty-specific document that complements the legal safety certification.

What Should You Do With Your Checklist?

When your installation is complete, you should receive a copy of the fully completed Benchmark checklist. Do not accept the job as finished without it. Check that all relevant sections are filled in and signed by the installer. File it with your boiler's user manual and other paperwork. It is as important as your receipt.

Choosing an Installer Who Follows the Process

A reputable installer will always complete the Benchmark checklist as a standard part of their service. They should explain its importance to you. Many trustworthy companies operate on a free-survey-then-fixed-quote model. Not as a separate product. Benchmark is the commissioning and service record scheme; the warranty itself comes from the boiler manufacturer. The two get mixed up because they are tied together: a manufacturer's warranty, whatever its length, generally depends on a completed Benchmark checklist at installation and a service record kept up to date afterwards. Nobody sells a "Benchmark warranty" as such, so if a quote lists one as an extra, ask what it actually covers.

What the checklist records

The checklist is a set of readings and confirmations taken when the boiler is commissioned. Typical entries include:

• The boiler make, model and serial number, and the installer's Gas Safe details
• The gas rate and the combustion readings taken with a flue gas analyser
• Confirmation that the system was cleaned and flushed, and that inhibitor was added
• Whether a system filter was fitted
• The controls fitted, such as the programmer, room thermostat and radiator valves
• For a combi, the hot water flow rate and temperature
• Confirmation that the controls and operation were explained to you

If a section is blank, ask the installer to complete it before they leave. A checklist with missing readings is not much more use than no checklist at all.

The service record pages matter just as much

Behind the commissioning checklist are the service record pages. Each annual service should be entered there and signed by the engineer who carried it out. Most manufacturer warranties require a service every 12 months, and a gap in the record gives the manufacturer grounds to question a claim. Put a reminder in your calendar for the anniversary of the installation.
